A wash of glowing orange silk gives this vintage obi cushion an immediate sense of warmth and vitality. At its centre, a richly detailed floral roundel unfolds beside silver bamboo, drawn from a Japanese Maru obi once worn for life’s important occasions. Threads of gilt catch the light as you move through the room, bringing subtle shimmer and depth. Joyful yet refined, it is a piece that lifts the mood of a space and invites attention.

Ethical Production

Each piece is handmade in our UK studio as part of a considered approach to making, using carefully sourced vintage Japanese silks.

• Genuine vintage kimono silks and obi belts dating from the 1930s onwards

• Sourced in Japan for their craftsmanship, character, and history

• Repurposed and reimagined for contemporary interiors

• Limited in number — once gone, it cannot be repeated

Each piece begins a new chapter for a textile that has already lived one life.

Packaging is fully recyclable, with materials chosen to reduce environmental impact wherever possible.

Care

Your vintage silk piece is made from delicate materials and should be handled with care:

• Keep away from direct sunlight to preserve colour

• Reshape gently after use to maintain form

• Store in a cool, dry place when not in use

• Do not machine wash or tumble dry

• Professional cleaning by a specialist is recommended

Made from authentic vintage Japanese silk, each piece may show gentle signs of age. This is part of its character and history.

What does the wisteria symbol on this piece mean?

Fuji (藤)

Wisteria represents love, grace and devotion.

Blooms briefly in the late spring with long, cascading clusters of violet and lilac flowers.

Closely associated with the powerful Fujiwara clan, who took their name from the flower and dominated Japan’s imperial court during the Heian period (794–1185 AD).

Genji wheel motif on floral Japanese silk brocade textile (Genji Guruma)

What does the Genji wheel symbol on this piece mean?

Genji Guruma (源氏車)

The Genji wheel represents change (transformation) and good fortune (luck).

Wooden wheels with spokes associated with the genji guruma cart, often shown detached from the carts.

Associated with the 'The Tale of Genji', a Heian period classic written in the early 11th century and considered to be the world’s first novel written by a women, Murasaki Shikibu.

Mid-Shōwa Period

The Shōwa era spanned 1926 to 1989, its name meaning 'enlightened peace' — a period of extraordinary contrast, from wartime turbulence to postwar renaissance. Many of our textiles date from the heart of this era.

The Maru Obi

The maru obi (丸帯, "round sash") sits at the very top of the obi hierarchy, the most prestigious, the most coveted, and today the most rare. Reserved for the grandest occasions, it was the mark of exceptional taste and status.

This piece is made from a maru obi, among the finest silk textiles the Japanese weaving tradition ever produced.
