This silk bolster cushion depicts the glowing light after a spring shower, a Turner-esque sky that shifts from pale blue to soft beige. Pine branches sway, their trunks traced in metallic gold, needles wind-whipped and alive. The pine has always been a symbol of resilience in Japan — it bends in the storm but does not break. Made from a vintage Japanese Fukuro Obi. The sage green velvet reverse anchors it beautifully.

Each piece is handmade in our UK studio as part of a considered approach to making, using carefully sourced vintage Japanese silks.

What does the pine tree symbol on this piece mean?

Matsu (松)

The pine motif symbolises longevity, steadfastness and wisdom in age.

Evergreen through winter, pine also represents resilience and enduring strength. Pine is also one of the Three Friends of Winter, alongside bamboo and plum blossom, symbols admired for remaining strong and beautiful during the cold season.

Sometimes shown through the traditional pine bark diamond pattern (matsukawabishi), inspired by the textured bark of ancient pine trees.

The Fukuro Obi

The fukuro obi (袋帯, "bag sash") is the most widely worn of the formal obi, a long elegant sash woven with intricate patterns, tied at the back in the distinctive taiko knot (named for its drum-like shape) that is the hallmark of Japanese formal dress.

This piece is made from a fukuro obi, its silk carrying the beauty of a craft tradition refined over centuries.
