Pine trees (Matsu) sweep across this large square silk cushion cover cut from a vintage Fukuro Obi, their branches depicted in orange, gold and green against a pale champagne gold silk ground. In Japanese tradition, the pine is steadfast and long-lived: a symbol of resilience, wisdom in age, and the renewal of the new year. A faint fold line runs through the silk, the ghost of how this obi was once worn, tied at the waist of a kimono. Part of the story.

Each piece is handmade in our UK studio as part of a considered approach to making, using carefully sourced vintage Japanese silks.

• Repurposed and reimagined for contemporary interiors

• Limited in number — once gone, it cannot be repeated

Packaging is fully recyclable, with materials chosen to reduce environmental impact wherever possible.

Your vintage silk piece is made from delicate materials and should be handled with care:

• Do not machine wash or tumble dry

What does the pine tree symbol on this piece mean?

Matsu (松)

The pine motif symbolises longevity, steadfastness and wisdom in age.

Evergreen through winter, pine also represents resilience and enduring strength. Pine is also one of the Three Friends of Winter, alongside bamboo and plum blossom, symbols admired for remaining strong and beautiful during the cold season.

Sometimes shown through the traditional pine bark diamond pattern (matsukawabishi), inspired by the textured bark of ancient pine trees.

The Fukuro Obi

The fukuro obi (袋帯, "bag sash") is the most widely worn of the formal obi, a long elegant sash woven with intricate patterns, tied at the back in the distinctive taiko knot (named for its drum-like shape) that is the hallmark of Japanese formal dress.

This piece is made from a fukuro obi, its silk carrying the beauty of a craft tradition refined over centuries.
