Soft gradients of blush, rose and vivid pink flow across this vintage obi cushion, creating a sense of movement and lightness. Stylised peacock feather forms arc through the design in silver and pale blue tones, woven with metallic thread that catches the light beautifully. In Japanese symbolism, peacocks are associated with love, kindness and goodwill. Fresh, uplifting and full of grace, it brings colour and softness to an interior.

What does the peacock symbol on this piece mean?

Kujaku (孔雀)

The peacock represents love, kindness and the power to transform adversity into beauty.

With its spectacular iridescent tail feathers, its 'eyes' are often seen as symbols of watchfulness and protection.

In Buddhist tradition, the peacock is sacred to the deity Mahamayuri, believed to transform poison into medicine, making kujaku a powerful emblem of resilience, purification and a generous heart.

Mid-Shōwa Period

The Shōwa era spanned 1926 to 1989, its name meaning 'enlightened peace' — a period of extraordinary contrast, from wartime turbulence to postwar renaissance. Many of our textiles date from the heart of this era.

The Fukuro Obi

The fukuro obi (袋帯, "bag sash") is the most widely worn of the formal obi, a long elegant sash woven with intricate patterns, tied at the back in the distinctive taiko knot (named for its drum-like shape) that is the hallmark of Japanese formal dress.

This piece is made from a fukuro obi, its silk carrying the beauty of a craft tradition refined over centuries.
