A square silk cushion cover cut from a vintage Fukuro Obi, woven in the prestigious Nishijin district of Kyōto. A serene mountain temple landscape unfolds across the silk in gold, green and rust: pine forests, rolling hills and a pavilion nestled among the trees. Woven by master silk weavers with metallic gilt thread. Imagine the peace of tranquil pine groves as you walk the pilgrim path from temple to temple, collecting red stamps on your white kimono. A rare and meditative piece.

What does the pine tree symbol on this piece mean?

Matsu (松)

The pine motif symbolises longevity, steadfastness and wisdom in age.

Evergreen through winter, pine also represents resilience and enduring strength. Pine is also one of the Three Friends of Winter, alongside bamboo and plum blossom, symbols admired for remaining strong and beautiful during the cold season.

Sometimes shown through the traditional pine bark diamond pattern (matsukawabishi), inspired by the textured bark of ancient pine trees.

What does the mountain symbol on this piece mean?

Yama (山)

The mountain represents strength, permanence and sacred places between heaven and earth.

In Japanese tradition, mountains (yama) are places where the earthly and the divine meet, home to gods, spirits and ancient pilgrimage paths that have been walked for centuries.

When birds are shown flying over mountains, it signifies the ability to rise above life's challenges.

The Shōwa era spanned 1926 to 1989, its name meaning 'enlightened peace' — a period of extraordinary contrast, from wartime turbulence to postwar renaissance. Many of our textiles date from the heart of this era.

The Fukuro Obi

The fukuro obi (袋帯, "bag sash") is the most widely worn of the formal obi, a long elegant sash woven with intricate patterns, tied at the back in the distinctive taiko knot (named for its drum-like shape) that is the hallmark of Japanese formal dress.

This piece is made from a fukuro obi, its silk carrying the beauty of a craft tradition refined over centuries.
