A long silk bolster cushion in peach and warm silver, woven from a Mid-Shōwa Maru Obi of the highest status. The ground is plum blossom (Ume), the first flower of spring, repeated across the surface in a soft shimmer of ivory and gold. Over it, a grid of tortoiseshell hexagons (Kikko) frames each bloom, catching the light as the silk moves.

Both patterns carry meaning. The hexagon promises longevity and good fortune. The plum blossom, blooming before the snow has cleared, stands for perseverance, renewal and peace. Fortune and peace, woven into every thread.

What does the plum blossom symbol on this piece mean?

Ume (梅)

The plum blossom motif represents longevity, renewal and perseverance.

The first flower to bloom in the spring, identified by its round petals.

Also known as the ‘Flower of Peace’, it is known as a protective charm against evil.

What does the hexagon pattern on this piece mean?

Kikkou (亀甲)

The hexagon pattern represents longevity, good fortune and protection.

Inspired by the shell of the tortoise, one of Japan's most sacred animals and believed to live ten thousand years.

An ancient motif, kikkou can also be found on Samurai armour designs.

The Shōwa era spanned 1926 to 1989, its name meaning 'enlightened peace' — a period of extraordinary contrast, from wartime turbulence to postwar renaissance. Many of our textiles date from the heart of this era.

The Maru Obi

The maru obi (丸帯, "round sash") sits at the very top of the obi hierarchy, the most prestigious, the most coveted, and today the most rare. Reserved for the grandest occasions, it was the mark of exceptional taste and status.

This piece is made from a maru obi, among the finest silk textiles the Japanese weaving tradition ever produced.
